What kinds of seeds do the beautiful bullfinches feed on in winter? On lilac seeds in the lilac bushes, where they are a joy to watch. Higher up, in maples and ash trees, there are still tasty seeds too and in the snow under them this and that is sticking up, carrying seed heads. But on rowans and whitebeams only some single berries are left hanging noiw...

 

At the bird feeder the favourite of the bullfinches is sunflower seeds. There the males show very decisively that all other birds should back off. But the more modestly coloured female bullfinches are always privileged, and the proud "gentleman“ may sometimes even be left without something for himself.
