Crested tit
Crested tit | Tutt – tihane |
The adult bird is easy to identify by its black-and-white patterned crest, other tits have nothing resembling that. With a movement of the crest its countenance changes. If you have binoculars, take a look at the bird’s eyes, of an unusual reddish colour.
The crested tit is seldom seen outside the forest; sometimes in a severe winter it may be a surprise visitor at the bird feeder. It is often busy on the trunks of trees, because winter stores have been secreted into branch and bark crevices. They are very stationary and may spend their whole life in a single small section of a wood. Young birds move around more.
The crested tit is a quite numerous breeding bird and winterer in Estonia’s mainland, but seldom gets to the islands. In winter they operate in small groups. The population is estimated at two or three hundred thousand individuals.
