Suckling lasted ten minutes

The seal pups grow fast, the seal mum’s milk has 60% fat and compared to cow milk, three times the amount of proteins. A seal pup increases its weight by up to a couple of kilos per day when the birth colony is sparsely populated, as in our camera view. In a dense population there is more noise and disturbance and the increase in weight is a little smaller. The sucking lasted ten minutes.

The image above shows the suckling female seal. Her weight is somewhere around 180 kilos and she has two teats. The fur is speckled. Within a few days we may see the larger and darker-coloured males. Grey seals mate a couple of weeks after the birth of the pups.

The seal pup has finished sucking. It is a round-faced, about one week old “baby”, whose weight at birth may have been around twelve kilos; so today the week-old being weighs around 25 kilos. The baby fur is winter white, with a slight chick yellowish shade for camouflage on the ice. Let us keep an eye on our young friends!
