Grey seal pup news

Seal pup, a few weeks old

At the end of February the seal surveillance team went to see how things were with the seal pups. The first pups were born in the beginning of February, most of them before the cold put a lid on the West Saaremaa coastal waters.
Altogether there were 19 grey seal pups on the islet, the greater part one or two weeks old. The seals have kept a couple of holes open at the shore and use them to go into the water.

There were no newly born pups and evidently no more will be born there. The border between ice and water is quite far away and new pups prefer to stay near the water’s edge.
