Adult male lynxes move around somewhat carelessly now. Their territory is large and sometimes several females live there. It is a time for family planning.
The fur colour varies quite strongly in our cat relative, but in winter the impression is of something light-coloured. The back and the long legs are covered with dark spots – larger and more sparsely on the back, densely on the legs. Sometimes they can form quite peculiar patterns. Brush-like tufts at the tips of the ears, the tail short, broad and with a black tip. In winter the soles of the paws are covered with fur making the carrying area larger on snow. Typically for felines they mostly move with the claws retracted; the paw looks large and round. All traces of activities are carefully concealed, even the excrements are hidden.
The prey is often hunted by stalking in dense coppices, near cultivated areas or animal paths where for instance deer flocks and their movements can be observed. Lynxes are no pursuers, they refrain from further hunting after a few powerful leaps.
Lynxes lead a secretive life and don’t easily come in sight of humans, but during the mating time the chance to see them is much more real.
