From early on Sunday morning until 1 pm in the day bird friends observed and counted city birds. The venture is arranged since 2002, to draw attention to the biodiversity in our urban environment and the arrival of migrant birds.

In Sunday’s contest there were more than sixty participants and they were from Mõisakülka and Kallaste in south Estonia up to Tallinn. Altogether birds were watched in fourteen cities on Sunday morning.

The bird friends noted birds of 86 species, or 13 fewer than last year; reasons - the delayed spring and the windy weather.

Despite this several spring bearers were observed: bean geese and greylag geese, starling, sky lark, lapwing and chaffinch.

Of non-migratory birds the most interesting were: hazel grouse, long-eared owl, tawny owl and middle spotted woodpecker.

Besides the capital, west Estonian cities turned out to be richest in species – Haapsalu (48) and Kärdla (47). From the inland cities as usual the longest list of species came from Tartu where 41 species were noted.

The inter-city bird contest is held every spring on the last Sunday of March and it is arranged by Estonia’s largest organisation for bird friends, the Estonian Ornithological Society.
