Hello, all birdwatchers!
This year is again a year for the regular national survey of geese that is made every two years. As usual all Branta and Anser geese stopping over on their spring migration are monitored, and in addition also the nesting of barnacle geese.
For geese stopping over here in spring the permanent monitoring areas are Matsalu (the whole bay and its surroundings), Silma (the Haapsalu inner bays and surroundings), Audru polder (the whole of the Audru area), Lake Võrtsjärv (Võrtsjärv and areas to the east of it up to Kurküla), Aardla (includes all the Tartu region), Vooremaa (all of Vooremaa and the night resting areas at lakes Soitsjärv and Saatjärv) and the Räpina polder (the polder and surroundings, towards west until Meelva).
The monitoring dates are April 11th and 24th (+/- one day) and May 16th (primarily the Branta geese on the western coast).
The geese are here, and there are indeed some to count. Although the official survey counts are organised by the state, we look forward to all additional observations from goose enthusiasts all over Estonia, in particular from the permanent monitoring areas; it will be much appreciated if they are sent to the co-ordinator of the geese survey:
An observation report should contain the precise date and time of the observation and the location (county, parish, village or water body), biotope (e g pasture, sprouting field, ploughed field etc), the number of birds by species and the observer/s.
Earlier survey results are on the survey web page:
The summary for this year will be ready in autumn, but it would be good to be able to sum up the results of the spring survey already in summer.
Sincerely,
