Finns Throw their Weight Around

Text: Urmas Sellis

Yesterday, January 20th, Aivar sat concealed near the eagle camera blind and attempted to read the numbers on the sea eagles' bands. Altogether, there were at least six different sea eagles visiting the feeding site or perching in trees in the near vicinity. Represented were all of the old flock from the first winter (hatched in 2008) through the fifth winter's birds (hatched in 2004). Half were wearing Finnish bands. Like this first winter's young bird:

The band on the left leg (here coded A396) enables us to know the exact place of the eagle's birth. The band of the same color on the right leg shows us that he's from Finland.

This bird's portrait can also be seen in the video cut Aivar assembled:

At the feeding site were an old acquaintance, the three-year-old Z263, and a two-year-old "Finn" from 2007 whose numbers we were unable to make out.

For comparison, Aivar filmed a four-year-old bird and who wasn't banded, and therefore his origins are unknown.

Today's very interesting events should soon be available on Eagle TV…
