Black Stork Traveler Situation Report
Young Birds
Mid – the daughter of Donna and Padis who was raised in the web-camera nest. Poorly fed. Most likely died in Belarus in the early days of September.
Raivo's Son – born in the southern part of Lääne-Virumaa (county in northern Estonia), and there was lots of food in his nest. Flew to Russia in the beginning, but for some reason turned back and became the meal of a sea eagle in the Lahemaa National Park near the village of Vihula.
Priidu's Son – the closely watched son of the Saaremaa Island pair, Piia and Priidu. Also well fed in his nest. Died in the Saudia Arabia desert.
Oss' Son – the last in Raplamaa (in western Estonia) to get his backpack (12 August). The same transmitter was also worn by his father, Oss. He was relatively poorly fed. He started his migration in a northern direction and made it to the Bay of Finland at Sirgala where he was injured (either landed on or flew into wires). He is wintering in the Nigula animal shelter. Oss' son's brother ended up in Finland.
We'll provide information on the older birds in our next installment.
