Eagles Migration

Oss has arrived, Tõnn has started his migration

Text: Urmas Sellis

Information from yesterday, April 4, shows that Oss was the first black stork to arrive in its nesting area. He started on his last migration day in this spring on the morning of April 1, from south-eastern Latvia near Daugavpils, and reached his nesting place in Raplamaa before evening. During that day Oss flew at least 330 km. In the nesting season we will not show the exact locations of the birds on the map. Of the observed birds, Oss spent the winter nearest to us – in Israel.

Last to start on the spring migration was greater spotted eagle Tõnn – he left the El Hondo wetlands, on the coast of the Mediterranean, in the afternoon of April 2, and had reached the French border yesterday evening, April 4.

The information is from the online bird migration map:

To make it easier to follow the birds with transmitters we have constructed an interactive migration map that can be seen here. A permanent link is in the left-hand column on the Looduskalender main page; it replaces the eagle and black stork migration topics that have fallen somewhat in neglect.
