The arrival of migrating birds has sparked the question in many: Where is our Greater Spotted Eagle Tõnn? Many outside Estonia are asking the question, as well, especially those nations where Tõnn generated excitement with his fall flyover.

Tõnn’s wintering grounds in Spain, the El Hondo Natural Park, opened its gates to guests, and our colleagues from that region have had the opportunity to observe Tõnn. On the 21st of February, Tony Zaragozi and Roque Belenguer observed two greater spotted eagles in El Hondo, the second bird older than Tõnn.

On the 8th of March both eagles were still there. An osprey teased Tõnn and when he took refuge in a eucalyptus tree our friends managed to get this picture:

Tõnn has now spent more than three months in the El Hondo wetlands. When his older friend begins his spring migration then perhaps Tõnn will also move north, but that’s only an assumption.

The map below shows Tõnn’s locations in El Hondo and its near vicinity during the month of March (March 1-13).
