Book of the Month: Large Boulders of Estonia

Glacial, or erratic, boulders together with the bank shore and the meteoritic craters belong to Estonia’s most important geological nature monuments. There are few who have not turned a respectful eye to the giant boulders, or who have not played “king of the rock” as children. Folk tales tell various legends about the big rocks, but to the scientists the glacial boulders first of all speak of the ice age and the movement patterns of the glaciers on Estonia’s mainland.

Large rocks – erratic boulders with a circumference of at least 10 m – have been scientifically described and studied in Estonia  from the second half of the 19th century. A systematic registration started in the beginning of the 20th century, initiated by the Loodusuurijate Selts, Estonian Naturalists Society. In the "Eesti ürglooduse raamat" (“Estonian Book of Primeval Nature”) database there are nearly 1800 such rocks. The majority of the largest and most notable of these boulders are today designated as nature protection objects and several of the giant rocks are important tourist attractions.

In the book "Eestimaa suured kivid", “Large Boulders of Estonia”, the geologist and dedicated advocate of popular science professor Enn Pirrus makes a thorough survey of the nature, investigation methods, measures, composition, distribution, use and protection of these boulders, and much more concerning them. The basis of the book is the database of the "Eesti ürglooduse raamat", “Estonian Book of Primeval Nature”, and the author’s own extensive field work during the last 15 years. In addition to the main text the book provides summaries of data about giant boulders (circumference more than 25 m) as well as about many up to now less familiar and visited large rocks. The text is illustrated with drawings and graphs and nearly 100 photos in colour.

The book has been published by the TTÜ Geoloogia Instituut, Institute of Geology at Tallinn University of Technology, with support from Keskkonnainvesteeringute Keskus. The book can be downloaded as a Pdf file here. For the printed version please contact the Institute of Geology at Tallinn University of Technology (tel. 620 30 10).
The book also contains anEnglish summary.
