The sun is low, there is varying cloudiness and rain or snow – so rainbows may appear in December in places with an open view.

If the sky is clear during the dark time – and there is plenty of it – we can see the meteor shower of the Geminids that you can read more about in Jaak Jaaniste’s article, ” ’Langevad’ tähed ja ’sabaga’ tähed - ’Falling’ stars and stars with ’tails’ “: LINK (in Estonian)

Aurora borealis or Northern lights have showed off quite often this year and have even  become somewhat everyday. Northern lights occur in the higher layers of the atmosphere as an optical phenomenon, caused by collisions of charged particles from the Sun, or the so-called ”solar wind”, with particles in the Earth’s atmosphere. On Tuesday last week the Northern lights showed off splendidly already early in the night in Tartu, Viljandi and elsewhere too.
