The birthing period of grey seals in the Baltic lasts from January to the end of March. 80% of the births take place in the first week of March.
The pups weigh 1-12 kg at birth, and increase by 2 kg per day on an average. The female’s milk contains more than 50% fat. Nursing lasts for 19 ... 21 days, on weaning from the mother the pups weigh 40 kg and sometimes even more. The weight of a female decreases by up to 4 kg per day in the nursing period.
The females do not feed during the nursing period.
