You are looking at Estonia’s oldest web camera nest. It is a former black stork nest although black storks do not nest in it but lesser spotted eagles. From the lesser spotted eagles’ point of view not only the XL size of the nest is exceptional but also its location in the middle of forests, far away from the feeding grounds. Yet a lesser spotted eagle pair discovered the vacant nest in 2010 and already in 2011 they succeeded in bringing up a chick whom the forum people named Tormi. The start of 2012 was also promising for lesser spotted eagles Tuuli and Remo until a goshawk roaming in the neighbourhood killed their chick Stefi in the beginning of August last year.

This year the
Kotkaklubi (
Eagle Club) installed the camera at the nest in Jõgevamaa on April 17th. The spring has been winter-like and thus the arrival of migratory birds has also been tardy – the lesser spotted eagles arrived at the nest for the first time only on May 2nd. For comparison it can be noted that initial arrivals of the eagles at the nest have been on April 21 (2011) and April 12 (2012). Considering the doings of the lesser spotted eagle pair during the last days, we can hope that in the next few days the female will have cause to stay at the nest more permanently …
From the forest the signal, by way of the Mikrotik aerials, reaches the mobile tower located 13 kilometres away and from there into the
Televõrgud fibre optical cable. The Televõrgud bring the transmitted signal to the
EENet server where the image is decoded and distributed to viewers. The forest part of the system is powered by solar panels.
