Spindle
The fruits are very toxic as are the spindle tree leaves.
We find the spindle growing naturally in South Estonia, in the Koiva River floodplain meadow, elsewhere it is a cultivated ornamental shrub.
At the end of September the reddish-pink fruits or capsules ripen. A capsule contains 2-4 light brown seeds. The leaves are egg-shaped, with finely serrated margin and a pointed tip. Branches are green as young, later brownish green and sometimes with cork-like strips.
A shrub or low tree, as you prefer, with an upright crown, up to five metres high. As an ornamental shrub it tolerates polluted urban air, grows fast, is shade tolerant, frost-hardy and takes well to pruning. In some years insect pests can eat the shrubs leafless.
