Monday night presented Saaremaa with additional snow that the plus degrees of Tuesday did not manage to melt away.
The prudent hind moves in company with her calf from this spring who was born in May or early June. The females with calves did not take part in the deer matings in autumn. Both have nice winter fur coats and in November the hind ends suckling the calf for good. If it is a female calf she will be sexually mature by next autumn; a male calf will have to start asserting its place in forest life one year later.
Hunger is not yet disturbing the red deer but feeding grounds must found and those who move there known: that means knowing how safe the environment is.
