Barn swallows
The Estonian Ornithological Society invites you to count swallows and to capture them in photos.
All who have mud nest building barn swallows or house martins nesting at their homes or summer houses are invited to participate in the counting of swallows at homes. „In gathering data on breeding swallows we want to keep an eye on the well-being of our national bird and its relatives“, project manager Mati Kose says.
Participation in the count is very simple and needs no special knowledge. The data on species numbers and nesting results can easily be entered at the web address:
A questionnaire in pdf format for printing can be downloaded from the same site. If you have any problems with printing it please consult helpful relatives or friends.
Photo enthusiasts are invited to participate in a swallow photo competition; we look forward to photos of our current Bird of the Year, the barn swallow, of house martins, sand martins and swifts. The main award in the competition goes to the best barn swallow photo. There will be three prizes each in two age groups. Moreover special prizes will be awarded on the themes „Swallow in the air“, „My home swallow“, „Swallow portrait“ and „Migrating swallows in Estonia and abroad“.
Contest rules and deadlines for the competition are available on:
The photo competition is arranged by EOÜ in co-operation with the NGO Fotokeskkond.
The organizers ask all to follow best practice in nature observations and not to disturb the nesting birds unduly at counting or photographing.
Both events take place within the „Bird of the Year 2011“ programme. The Bird of the Year activities this year are supported by the Environmental Investment Centre, Estonian Air, Nordic Digital, Overall, Kalev, Olde Hansa.
