Birder’s diary - 27.01

Before leaving Hiiumaa I visited the Nuutri river mouth in Kärdla once more. There were 850 mallards in the evening of the day before yesterday and other waterfowl too but today the river mouth was frozen over and a white-tailed eagle huddled there instead of the waterfowl.
It already looked as if the Hiiumaa trip would not add any new species to my year list. Fortunately it did not end quite like that. On the way to the port I managed to see a common crossbill. It was rather nervous and called loudly in a spruce top. The crossbill was the 102nd bird species in my 2012 list.
Back on the mainland, and the "mandatory“ stop at the Haapsalu water treatment plant had to be made. I didn’t find the robin this time, but the gadwall was still there among the mallards. It had tattered wings but still could fly. Hopefully it will manage to endure until spring.

The gadwall with the tattered wings is still there at the  Haapsalu water treatment plant dam (27.01.2012).
