Tits drink in winter too

What does the great tit look for, climbing up the trunk of the great ash, its beak snowy?

Even with many degrees of cold a tree trunk in direct sunlight  warms up enough to make the snow between the moss tufts begin to melt. The tit snatches beakfuls that need as little warming up as possible.

Liquid is always needed, thirst is there, in a hard cold water can be had from snow. But with such a small body melting snow is not a cheap business. Because of this it is important that when feeding garden birds they should not be given food containing salt such as bread, crumbs, the morning porridge.
