Habitat for common crossbills. Alliklepa, Harjumaa.

In nature in winter the habitats with the greatest number of birds are mixed forests with a dominance of spruces, particularly if the spruces occur in several vegetation layers. Birds use pure broadleaf forests occasionally, there we rather find seed specialists, or if sufficiently old trees occur, woodpeckers too. Among areas with strong human influence farmyards are of course rich in birds; very different species can be encountered there and almost all our mainland winter birds may appear occasionally. Likewise sparrowhawks and pygmy owls for instance come there to hunt the tits and greenfinches feeding there. The urban landscape is poor in birds in general, at least seeing to the community of species.
