Rowan

Rowan; mountain ash      Harilik pihlakas       Sorbus aucuparia

The rowan is well known to insects, birds, animals and ourselves. Have you smelled  rowan flowers? The smell of the beautiful flowers (arranged in a compound cyme) is  slightly off-putting – what does it remind of? meat gone bad ...? Bees and other insects on the other hand have plenty to do during the rowan flowering period.

Rowans are undemanding as far as habitat goes, managing in less fertile and dry spots, but there they mostly grow as shrubs. In better and more fertile habitats they grow into quite splendid trees.
