Goldcrest
An ordinary autumn day at Sõrve säär. There was no particularly intense migration today but despite that during the day over 100 bird species were observed at the Sõrve säär, more precisely 102. The most interesting creatures of the day were the crested lark (Galerida cristata) that was busy around the lighthouse and had already been there since August 19, and the Lapland longspur (Calcarius lapponicus) that is a rare passing migrant in Estonia.
Ringing goes on at full speed at Sõrve säär, in the morning 260 birds got into the nets during a few hours. The great majority of the ringed birds were goldcrests and tits, but for instance a bluethroat (Calcarius lapponicus) also got a ring on its leg. We look eagerly forward to a weather change. In a couple of days a quieter morning should at last come in between, and then a record catch day may arrive. What happens at Sõrve säär can be read in the Sõrve bird station diary.
