There was a slight mist at Sõrve säär in the morning and because of that much twittering was heard from the bushes, the birds simply did not want to get out on migration. Within a few hours nearly 50 birds got into the nets but there was no one particularly exciting among them. Since quite poor weather was promised for the next few days we decided to close shop for this time and get back to the mainland. I am not sure about getting back to the Sõrve bird station this autumn any more but at least in the beginning of December I will certainly be back to collect winter points. About what happens at Sõrve säär more can be read in the Sõrve bird station
diary.
Red-flanked bluetail, ringed on 29.09.2012 at Sõrve säär, 5th find in Estonia
What do I remember from Sõrve säär this autumn? Among rarities of course the red-flanked bluetail that got into the net on September 29th. The only yellow-browed warbler of Sõrve säär this year came from the net on October 3rd; it has been seen 6 times altogether in Estonia this autumn. A crested lark has been staying at Sõrve säär all autumn; it turned up for the first time already on August 19th. The winter points collectors hope that the bird stays in place maybe even until December. From the migration the record brambling migration on October 9th comes to mind, during the day we counted at least 102 500 individuals of them. Because of the warm autumn many late leavers could be seen in October, and with regard to two species record late observations were made – on October 9th we succeeded to photograph a grasshopper warbler and on October 12th a marsh warbler got into the net.

For once over many years I caught and ringed birds at Sõrve säär for a quite long period too. At the moment information about re-found birds has not arrived yet but at Sõrve säär I managed to find a
robin with a Finnish ring about whose ringing data we don’t know anything yet, and on October 2nd a
goldcrest got into the net that had been ringed a couple of weeks earlier, on September 17
th, in Pärnumaa at the Kabli bird station.
The next bird trip will go to North-west Estonia on next weekend, since
Estbirding will have its general meeting in Läänemaa in Tuksi on October 19-21. When a large gang of birders are let loose in nature then maybe some interesting creatures will show up too.
