Investigation into the shooting of the white-tailed eagle ended inconclusively

The official response from the Environmental Inspectorate’s Eastern region, Lääne-Viru office, to the enquiry from Looduskalender.ee regarding the shooting of the white-tailed eagle „Nimetu“:

Referring to the X-ray images it can be stated that in all likelihood the white-tailed eagle died as a result of shooting but specifically how this happened and who could have done it is still not clear.
In the tissues of the dead white-tailed eagle small metal fragments could be seen but according to experts it is not possible to extract them and analyse them more precisely. Any bullet or shot has not been found in the carcass. The bird was already badly damaged at the time of discovery – the entrails and breast had been eaten by other birds and animals. Consequently it is not possible to state what weapon or ammunition was used to shoot the eagle.
The Environmental Inspectorate (Keskkonnainspektsioon) has carried out the measures that are feasible within the framework of a misdemeanour investigation, interrogating local hunters and inhabitants in the area as witnesses. They have however not been able to help us further in clarifying the circumstances of the killing of the eagle. We have also made enquiries at mobile communications operators in order to secure information on movements in the area by way of communications but regrettably we have not obtained the expected results.

The press release from Public Relations Advisor Leili Tuul at the Environmental Inspectorate (Keskkonnainspektsioon) to the Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) news portal yesterday:

Following this it is not possible to state what kind of weapon or ammunition was used in the shooting of the eagle.

We have also made enquiries at mobile communications operators in order to secure information on movements in the area by way of communications but regrettably we have not obtained the hoped-for results.

"If anyone has any information that might bring the investigation of this regrettable incident further we ask them to please inform the Environmental Inspectorate (Keskkonnainspektsioon)," Leili Tuul added.
