The time of violets is coming

Bog violets. Suitsu, Matsalu

In cities pansies or cultivated violets  shine in flower pots and garden beds; their beautiful relatives can be seen in abundance in the forest undergrowth and in fields. Already in April the bog violet and the common dog violet from the Viola genus, with their mostly purple-blue flowers, catch the eye. A little later the Teesdale violets (Viola rupestris) and the wonder violets (Viola mirabilis) that have two kinds of flowers appear – the world of violets is worth closer study.

In Estonia more than fifteen violet species can be found in nature; some of them embellish the forest floor during the whole summer, as do the pansies in garden beds
