Stormy evening at southern coast of Kihnu
On the Tower birdwatching day the tower in Kihnu had the greatest number of species.
On May 18 the third Tower birdwatching day arranged by the Estonian Ornithological Society took place. The beautiful spring weather attracted more than a hundred bird friends to the towers.
Birders kept the species list counts and expected bird friends in 9 counties and 16 birdwatching towers (
http://www.eoy.ee/node/661). The largest species number, 107 bird species, was noted in Pärnu county on Kihnu island, at the Pikänä bird observation tower. The Lääne county bird observation tower Haeska with 91 species and the Räpina coastal observation tower in Põlva county with 81 species followed in numbers of species. Altogether 159 different bird species were noted at the various observation towers. The most exciting observations were the peregrine falcon and the greenish warbler in Kihnu at the Pitkänä birdwatching tower, the bearded tit in Hiiumaa at the Orjaku tower and the white-winged terns that were seen at three observation sites – Aardla, Räpina and Orjaku.
The Estonian Ornithological Society thanks all bird friends who took part in the event. The biggest thanks however go to the birders who guided the bird friends. They were: Leho Aaslaid, Andres Kalamees, Mati Kose, Alpo Koukila, Hannele Koukila, Kuido Kõiv, Arne Laansalu, Hillar Lipp, Toomas Mastik, Riho Männik, Mariliis Märtson, Kadri Niinsalu, Margus Ots, Uku Paal, Thea Perm, Vello Tarning, Tarmo Teppe, Raul Vilk and Kaarel Võhandu.
Arranging a Tower birdwatching next year too is certainly in the plans.
