White-collar of Alutaguse

White-collar is our name for a young male bear who has been observed at the Alutaguse watching hut during the last few years

The special characteristics of White-collar are the large lighter-coloured patches at the sides of the neck; the upper part of the neck is dark, and when he bends forward, a contrasting large black band can be seen on the neck. White-collar becomes more difficult to recognize with time, because his white collar darkens by and by. This is normal for brown bears, the quite common white neck rings of bear cubs disappear as they become adults. Luckily White-collar has some more distinctive features: a round head, sleek “hair-do“, and a rather stumpy body shape. He can be about 4 years old. Young male bears begin to mate at about 5 years old. We haven’t seen White-collar with a female, although this year he was gone from the observation ground for a couple of weeks at the height of the mating period.

Just recently wildlife photographer Remo Savisaar took a splendid photo of White-collar  http://blog.moment.ee/

White-collar can be seen, photographed and video recorded from your computer screen through Looduskalender’s Alutaguse bear camera; he can be seen and photographed with your own eyes and camera from the Alutaguse bear viewing huts  http://natourest.ee/
