The river jewel arriving

I have noticed some birds earlier too with missing wing feathers; this has never given the slightest sign that their flying ability should somehow be impaired. So it was too with this female kingfisher with the wet breast. She caught fish and brought up her chicks.

On the last weekend of June, at the Estonian Ornithological Society’s summer days, the Bird of the year 2014 was proclaimed: the kingfisher. Although the kingfisher is scarce in Estonia , it is a well known and beloved bird species due to its looks. With its blue back plumage, exotic and unique in our nature, it is called the jewel of the North, and for the same reason it is also one of the favourites of photographers. 50 up to 300 kingfisher pairs nest in Estonia . The kingfisher belongs to the II. category of protected animal species and to the Annex 1 uf the so-called bird directive of the Europeanj Union..

In the year of the kingfisher plans include, in addition to introducing the kingfisher, to map the observation places for it, to get more exact estimates of its numbers, to investigate its breeding ecology etc. Attention is also turned to other birds in flowing waters.

The Estonian Ornithological Society has selected Birds of the year from 1995 onwards, and the kingfisher is the 20th in order. Selecting a bird of the year is designed to introduce a bird or a species group occurring in Estonia to the public and to involve nature enthusiaasts in the study and conservation activities for this bird. The bird of this year is the partridge and the birds of earlier years can be found on the EOÜ web site
