The poplar admirals are active mostly in wooded landscapes, at the height of the tree crowns. They are tied to poplars or aspens because there is the dinner table of the poplar admiral caterpillars. The butterflies let themselves be photographed on the ground where they settle down at puddles to drink, or to lick mineral substances.

Certainly one of our largest butterflies if not the largest – it depends on the measures of the individual specimens, and can cause arguments. The white admiral (Limenitis camilla) is a little smaller, very similar to the poplar admiral, and we will write about it in the next few days.

The wings with blackish-brown and dark grey basic colour can have a wing span of up to eight centimetres. The flecks on the forewings and the band on the rear wings is  off-white. The edges of the wings are decorated with a bluish border and orange arcs. The colourful undersides of the wings are shown on Urmas’s photo. Some have been endowed with colours!
