Barnacle geese
On the weekend more than a hundred thousand birds were viewed in Estonia.
Nearly forty European countries participated in the international birdwatching days on the weekend. According to preliminary results a total of 2,4 million birds were counted. By Sunday afternoon 112 000 birds from 147 species had been counted in Estonia.
The most numerous species were barnacle goose (31 700 birds), longtailed duck (6 500 birds), starling (5700), siskin (5500) and mew gull (5300).
The most frequently seen species were great tit, jay, great spotted woodpecker, magpie and blackbird. Great rarities were not seen on the observation days, but many species late on their migration were notable, such as nightjar, swift, spotted flycatcher, shelduck, curlew, osprey and others.
The Estonian national bird, the barn swallow, was also surprisingly frequently encountered. Evidently it is due to the still consistently warm weather.
We look forward to receive bird observations made on the weekend until October 11th. They can be submitted online through the survey form on the EOÜ website:
