The mushroom was growing on the Pakri cape, in a clearing once cleaned off almost to the underlying limestone for the building of the wind power park. Taking the habitat as starting point – alvar forests and juniper thickets - and the fact that the Sowerbiella imperialis favours limestone, it may be found in North, Northwest or West Estonia. As a non-edible and protection-classified mushroom which must not be picked it could be identified only at home using the "400 Eesti seent – 400 Estonian fungi“ book by Kuulo Kalamees and Vello Liiv.
We dared not use foreign mushroom guides. If anyone should identify the fungus in the photo as the orange peel fungus, Aleuria aurantia, or even some third species please let us know on our
Facebook page.
