What is round the neck of the lynx...

Täpp got his GPS tracking device on December 28, 2008

Our readers and viewers have had questions about last Thursday’s video.

Male lynx "Täpp“ (Spot) got his name thanks to his beautiful spotted fur coat in December 2008 when he first made acquaintance with a cage trap. A telemetric monitoring device was fitted on him in order to observe the movements, diet and other important doings of lynxes. All this of course aimed at learning more about the species in local conditions. A similar transmitter communicating the movements of the lynx was replaced with a new one in March 2011. Täpp is now 8 - 10 years old, and his activities in the forest are well known. It should be noted here that only very few of Täpp’s brethren reach this age. In early spring we plan to remove his collar permanently.

Three trail cameras, that are switched on to recording by motion detectors and that  according to the manufacturers don’t disturb large game animals, immediately scare off wolves from the observation path (the so called “invisible” flashes of light are clearly visible in the video record). We are trying to work out how to rebuild the cameras to make them less intrusive on capturing the activities of interesting animals in their natural environment.
