The wagtail or ”icebreaker” has been considered as an early arrival in Estonia but still in March-April.
Riho Männik observed the first crane in Viljandimaa today.
Woodpeckers have become more active and visible. Vello Keppart saw the three-toed woodpecker in action in the Luua forest. Riho Kinks spotted two loudly quarrelling middle spotted woodpeckers in the Ornithological Society’s yard.

The winter of the Bird of the Year is coming to an end.
February is the last winter month of the Bird of the Year – the kingfisher. With suitable weather the first migrating kingfishers may arrive in Estonia from migration already in March. So it is high time to go looking for wintered kingfishers in nature, and also let us know about your observations. With the aid of people moving about in nature we try this year to specify the kingfisher’s winter distribution and abundance in Estonia. The easiest way is to use the Bird of the Year web site:
