A dull forest floor simply glowed red from cup fungi. And suddenly I managed to see this beautiful springtime smile. Just so they grew there on the forest floor.

So the colourful elf cup fungi look on the ”grey” post-winter forest floor, should we happen to notice them. The greater part of them have got buried under the forest debris during winter. The little cups, without stems and with a red inside, can grow to a diameter of up to a couple of centimetres (rarely larger) and may have started developing at the end of last year. These cup fungi grow on decaying alder and hazel twigs, in rather wet deciduous or mixed forests, but they can also be found in spruce forest renewals. Clearly more common in the forests of southern and eastern Estonia than elsewhere.
There are no other similar red-coloured fungi in spring – the fungus itself is not edible.
