A toad has woken up from hibernation
Toad; Common toad; European toad Harilik kärnkonn ehk
Euroopa kärnkonn Bufo bufo
Urve told Looduskalender that she had met a toad on Sunday evening about 7 o’clock pm on the Harku forest health track – a toad somewhat clumsy from the cold … Dusk is a good time to move for frogs and toads. Hopefully the toad managed to crawl into shelter under a sod or turf and slumber on there until the spring weather is more suitable for being outside. Toads went into their winter nests, somewhere in shelter of a grass turf or tree roots, at the end of September last year.
It is is a large, sturdy and strong frog, uniformly brown, quite well camouflage-coloured, with a skin that is abundantly covered with warts; the belly is yellowish or dirty white. On the abdomen we can see a marble-like pattern on the whitish or greyish skin if we lift up the toad, to inspect it closer or like Urve, to lifted the toad out of the way. Common toads have a horizontal eye pupil, the eye iris is beautifully copper-coloured or deep gold.
Spawning time for toads starts in late April and only during that period the otherwise land-bound creatures head into water for 6 to 8 days.
