Nuthatch and greenfinch
Nuthatches are faithful to their nest sites; suitable habitats are parks, cemeteries and broadleaf as well as mixed forests. They move around and guard their territory throughout the year, so we can quite often notice a nuthatch pair in action near the birdfeeder. They roam around in the surroundings with tit flocks.
They don’t fear neither people nor cats, and other quarrelsome passerines calm down when a nuthatch appears. With time and patience you can teach a nuthatch to take food from your hand in the home garden.
They pick several sunflower seeds from the birdfeeder in the beak to enjoy them leisurely a bit away, or to hide them in store in bark crevices. All kinds of seeds will do for nuthatches as well as unsalted lard, ground meat and fat balls. If you have a nice oat sheaf to hang out the nuthatches may well prefer that …
Bluish-grey crown and back plumage; the streamlined body of the nuthatch ends with a short strong tail. Underparts whitish, flanks and the undertail coverts are rust-coloured but with white tips. The striking black eye stripe extends to the shoulder; a white patch at the dark brown eyes, the long and strong beak dark gray. The plumage of all nuthatches is similar. Body length less than 15 centimetres, weight around 20 grams:
