Tawny owl        Kodukakk        Strix aluco

We see the male bird in the nest rather seldom: egg-laying time is soon here and only female owl Klaara will lay on the eggs; Klaus is out hunting all night to feed Klaara and the family – a quite heavy responsibility rests on his shoulders.

The males of tawny owls are smaller than the females and the plumage of Klaus is lighter than that of Clara. The length of the males is a little less than 40 centimetres, that of females more than 40. The difference in weight between the sexes varies from 400 grams up to three-quarters of a kilo. The wingspan is less than a metre, 5 centimetres or a little more. The eyes of tawny owls are dark brown, the beak greenish yellow. The legs have feathers, claws are brown.

About the varying plumage colours of tawny owls we recommend those who are interested to read the home page of the ”bird of the year”: LINK

The plumages of the larger Ural owl and the tawny owl are rather similar. Differences: the shorter tail of the tawny owl and the light streaks on the top of the head that show nicely in the photos.

About a thousand up to two thousand pairs breed in our parks and cultural landscapes. The population density is calculated at 3,5 pairs per 100 square kilometres.
