Waiting for the second egg in the buzzard nest ...

Buzzard, as yet nameless, incubating in nest no 1 – webcam image

Some buzzards have probably started their breeding even earlier in Estonia, but in the first of the nests with webcam monitoring the first egg is there since  noon on Saturday, March 28th. It is worthwhile looking out for a second egg on Monday.

Buzzards can lay up to five eggs, most often however 3-4 in good mouse years and 2-3 in poorer. Now in early spring there seem to be enough mice in the fields but it does not necessarily stay so. Thus it is complicated to predict the number of eggs in a nest.

In the nest-building stage the buzzards were seen at the nest mostly in the mornings, but now eggs can be left on their own only for brief moments – the calls of jays are often heard and they would surely be interested in an ”egg dish”.
Nest tidying still goes on in the other webcam nest but there too egg-laying can begin soon.
In both buzzard nests with webcams names for the nesting pair can be proposed until April 1st on the form - LINK

There is more information here about both web cameras and in the forum (in English).
Buzzard Villu, whose spring migration we have followed has reached his breeding territory in Põlvamaa, but we don’t know where his nest is yet and there is no camera.

Monitoring the nest life of buzzards is part of the Bird of the Year 2015 project of the Estonian Ornithological Society which is supported by the Environmental Investments Centre (Keskkonnainvesteeringute Keskus). Many others help and assist us too.
