On the Easter birdwatching days on the weekend at least 85 000 birds, of 151 species, were recorded as of the time of writing despite the poor weather. Observations can still be sent in until Thursday, April 9th; the final summary will be made next week.
According to the preliminary summary more than 1/3 of the listed birds were geese, who have an active migration going. Chaffinches, blackheaded gulls and mews and cormorants were also seen in large numbers.
Wagtails, robins, redwings, song thrushes, wheatears, ospreys, black storks and others are arriving too.
The most frequently seen species were great tit, hooded crow, chaffinch, mallard and starling according to the preliminary summary.
The rarest find of the Easter holidays happened already on Friday where a Baffin Island Branta goose was seen among the geese near Räpina. The native origin of this bird here is however doubtful.
Birds seen on Easter weekend can be entered until April 9th on the EOÜ website:
or sent by ordinary mail to Veski 4, 51005 Tartu.
EOÜ would like to thank to all who took part in the birdwatching days, the organizers of birdwatching trips, and Kristjan Adojaani and the OÜ 5dVision for creating the electronic observation form!
