During the present Year of the Buzzard we have had the chance to make a first acquaintance with the three buzzard species in Estonia at nature nights and on excursions. Autumn is the time to dip deeper into the world of buzzards and to learn more about their life. For this the Estonian Ornithological Society starts a series of lecture nights where each lecture focuses on a theme with bearing on the Birds of the Year. The buzzard nights will take place in Tartu (Loodusmaja Lille tn. 10) and Tallinn (the Zoo, Ehitajate tee 150), culminating at the end of the year with the great bird night, by now a tradition, in the National Library in Tallinn.

In the first buzzard nights, on September 9th and 22nd, we will take a look outside Estonia. Ülo Väli will tell us about the many buzzards in the world and how fascinating and diverse their behaviour is. For more information about the buzzard nights see the website of the Bird of the Year: LINK
The Estonian Ornithological Society nominates a Bird of the Year from 1955 onwards. The aim is to present a bird species or a group of bird species that occur in Estonia and to involve people with an interest in nature in the study and protection of these birds.
