At the sun telescope.

With the aid of just such a small optical device as in this photo you can see for yourself that the sun is not at all a smooth little yellow ball but instead a rather ‘hairy’ heavenly body with an ever-moving surface. With luck there may be sunspots and enormous explosions to be seen, even if they only appear like very thin thread lines when they reach our eyes.

This, and much more, will be discussed on the weekend, March 20-22nd , at the astronomy conference "Stars of the Nightingale Valley 2009" that will be held at Rõuge. Scientists Laurits Leedjärv, Tõnu Viik, Elmo Tempel and Tõnu Tuvikene from Tartu Observatory, and Mare Kõiva and Urmas Sisask will be there to share new information about the universe, and of course about our own solar system.

With this conference we want to celebrate the international Year of Astronomy, the 400-year anniversary of the invention of the telescope ... and the beginning of spring which according to the astronomers takes place 4 hours 16 minutes before the conference opens.

Information at the conference will be presented so that all who have caught even the slightest interest in astronomy will be able to understand. So listeners of all ages are welcome to the conference!
