Spring in South and North Estonia at the same stage

Brimstone butterfly on colt's-foot.

Thanks to the thick snow blanket that covered south-eastern Estonia this year spring develops in the same rhythm throughout the country  – the brimstone butterfly was seen at the same time in the north and in the south, and even the colt’s-foot (Tussilago farfara)  put up its buds in both areas. In Tallinn its yellow flower could be seen already two weeks ago in cracks in the asphalt. The flower was still half-closed and a child passing by cried happily: “Look, a dandelion!”

But it was explained that there is still some time to go before the dandelions flower. And when this, our best-known member of the Compositae family comes in flower, nature in north and south Estonia will have returned to its usual development rhythm. The south warms up quickly, in the north the sea still cools the land at night for some time and brings spring to a standstill.
