Lesser butterfly orchid.

The search for the favourite Estonian song has just finished on TV, and this inspired me to ask – which is the most beautiful flower name in Estonian? Isn’t it ÖÖVIIUL, “night violin”, the lesser butterfly orchid? With its highly romantic name and a fine and delicate scent this beauty belongs to the early flowering group of orchids.

You can look for it at forest paths and in wooded meadows, greens and ditch banks. It is particularly exciting to find it in a summer evening or in the dusk of night when it gleams white from far away. And then put your nose to it! In bright daylight it can often stay unnoticed for an untrained eye among all the other plants.

Old friends of the lady’s slipper and new orchid explorers can go looking for them in the Mahtra boglands with the author every day between June 8 and June 14. Just contact me!

In Mahtra LKA (Nature Protection Area) there are about 20 orchid species
