Hills under the pines: reindeer lichen

The northern reindeer lichen makes a miniature hillock landscape.

The northern or star-tipped reindeer lichen (Cladina stellaris) is easy to recognise among other lichens, if you look at the shape of its thallus or body: it grows like a little rounded hill. It is as if small domes were growing beneath the pines. Its relatives, the grey or true reindeer lichen, the yellow-green reindeer lichen and the shrubby reindeer lichen grow, seen by our eyes, more as level mats.
