Scrambled eggs in the forest

Dog vomit slime mold or Fuligo septica.

Such lovely yellow flowers in the pine needle litter! The spot of colour surprises forest walkers, and makes one bend down and inspect it more closely. But on touching it the finger becomes slimy and the “flowers” lose their shape. It is a slime mold, Fuligo septica, known as scrambled egg slime mold, or dog vomit slime mold, or troll butter (or many other names, and mostly uncomplimentary in all languages). It is a unicellular organism. And it moves! If the spot where the yellow thing was first noticed is marked, next day you will see that it has slipped a little bit forward. The movement is of course very slow, and on its way it feeds on other organisms that it comes across: bacteria, fungus spores and fungi. A fascinating creature!
