Goldenrod.
The yellow of the lady's bedstraw that made the hayfields fragrant, and coloured the second half of summer so cheerfully has been splendidly substituted in early autumn by the goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) that catches the eye from far away with its large flowerheads on stems sometimes up to 75 centimetres tall. Although the flowers are stately enough it isn’t worth picking them for a vase – the flowerheads quickly droop and crumble on to the table.
