Down in the cellar

Wintering herald moth. Piusa sand caves, South-eastern Estonia.

When you go down to the cellar now to get a bottle of apple juice or a jar of jam, it can be worthwhile to look for wintering guests: maybe there is a dark-coloured caterpillar curled up in the dust in a corner. Or, on the walls, pale-winged heralds (Scoliopteryx libatrix) and darker tissue moths (Triphosa dubitata), who have found a convenient place for surviving the cold period. For insect fans winter cellars are splendid places for investigations, but even those who have only started on their acquaintance with the invertebrates can meet a friend or two there. Of course the cellar must not be heated, because then nobody will come there for wintering.
