Soul time in the forest

Nõuni lake in November.

In the time of Souls, when you go to visit the graves of your loved ones, you might also take a short walk in a nearby wood. Is the forest already asleep? Everything is rather silent, but it is deceptive. Under the broadleaf trees there is a layer of leaf litter, under the conifers bright evergreens: horsetails, cowberry stalks, mosses and lichens. There is life in both forests. And both offer food for the deer family animals: deer eat young twigs and horsetails (Equisetum) and search for aspen leaves in the litter, and dried grass under the snow in winter, the elks crunch mostly on branches and tree bark. The coming of snow doesn’t leave the animals without food, only periods with ice bark are really dangerous for them.
On a Soul-time forest ramble we will probably not meet any of the big animals in the woods, but traces of their doings – on the trees and under the trees – are sure to be there to see
.
