You can see magpies in the winter both in city and country surroundings, and sometimes in quite unexpected places; only in forest new growth and felled areas the probability of seeing them is not so great.
Adult magpies are rather stationary, and keep together in pairs the year round, but young birds roam around in the winter.
They are exceptionally beautiful birds. At a first glance they seem black-and-white, but the black shimmers in blue, violet and green hues. The tail is about half of the total length of a grown bird, juveniles have shorter tails.
Counts made over the last twenty years indicate that their number is decreasing.
